295 UNDERPASS INITIATIVE

The 295 Underpass Initiative is an innovative placemaking project led by the Anacostia Business Improvement District (BID), designed to transform the gateway at the 295 underpass at the top of Marion Barry Avenue. Serving as a key connection between the Anacostia business corridor and Anacostia Park, this project aims to create a vibrant and immersive artistic experience that celebrates the community and enhances the local environment.
Curated by renowned local artist Eric B. Ricks, the initiative will feature a dynamic blend of murals, animated lighting, and sculptural elements that transform the underpass into a unique cultural landmark. By integrating these art installations, the project seeks to bridge the space, foster engagement, and draw visitors into Anacostia’s rich history and creative spirit.
In collaboration with key community stakeholders, including the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), the American Society of Landscape Architects, the National Park Service (NPS), the Office of Planning, and the 11th Street Bridge Park, the initiative is carefully designed to reflect community input and preserve the area’s character while fostering connectivity and creativity.
Lighting for the project is being provided by Lebow Lighting Solutions, ensuring that the installation’s visual impact extends well into the evening, offering an illuminated experience that enhances the underpass both day and night.
