Washington entrepreneurs now have a new tool designed to simplify the process of starting, licensing, and managing a business in the District.

The DC Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection (DLCP) officially launched its Business One Stop Solution, or BOSS, on August 10, creating a centralized online platform that brings several business registration and licensing services together in one place.

The launch arrives during Black Business Month, a time dedicated to recognizing and supporting Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs. In Washington, where small businesses play a major role in both the local economy and the character of the city’s neighborhoods, the new system could be particularly valuable for entrepreneurs navigating the requirements of opening and operating a business.

DC is home to more than 75,000 small businesses, representing more than 98 percent of businesses in the District. These businesses support more than 233,000 jobs and include everything from restaurants and retailers to artists, creative entrepreneurs, professional services, and neighborhood-based businesses.

Black entrepreneurship also holds a significant place within Washington’s economic and cultural history. Black-owned businesses continue to contribute to commercial corridors across the city, creating jobs while helping preserve the identity and culture of DC neighborhoods.

One Place for Multiple Business Services

Before BOSS, entrepreneurs often had to navigate separate systems to complete different stages of the business process. The new platform is designed to bring many of those functions under one digital roof.

Through BOSS, users can access services related to corporate registration, business licensing, vending, short-term rentals, special events, and weights and measures registration using a single platform.

The system also allows information from corporate registrations to carry into licensing applications, reducing the need to repeatedly enter the same information.

Other improvements include a customer dashboard showing license status and outstanding requirements, notifications for upcoming deadlines, the ability to make certain updates while a business license remains active, and stronger connections between DLCP and other District agencies.

The goal is to reduce paperwork, eliminate unnecessary duplication, and give business owners a clearer picture of what they need to do to remain compliant.

Supporting DC’s Neighborhood Businesses

The launch is part of the District’s broader effort to make Washington a more accessible place to start and grow a business.

For neighborhood commercial corridors, simplifying those processes can have an impact beyond individual entrepreneurs. Independent restaurants, galleries, retailers, creative studios, entertainment venues, and other small businesses contribute to the identity of communities across the District and help create the destinations residents and visitors experience every day.

That connection is particularly important in communities where entrepreneurship, arts, culture, and neighborhood identity intersect. Supporting local businesses can help strengthen commercial corridors while creating more opportunities for residents to build and sustain businesses within their own communities.

As Black Business Month continues throughout August, residents are also encouraged to intentionally seek out and support Black-owned businesses across Washington.

For current and aspiring entrepreneurs, BOSS provides another resource for navigating the administrative side of turning an idea into an operating business — and keeping that business moving forward once its doors are open.
