El Mac, Aise Born, Aniekan Udofia
This mural was painted in Autumn of 2024 in Anacostia, Washington DC. It was a collaboration with my crewmate AiseBorn, who painted the mandala/halo surrounding the figure. (Talented DC local Aniekan Udofia also assisted with painting the clouds.)
I visited Anacostia last Spring, where I met some local artists and photographed a bunch of local kids to get inspiration and reference images for the mural design. These kids were awesome, and one four year-old girl in particular, named Unique, was especially radiant and self-possessed, and her image became the basis for this design. I wanted to convey the sense that this little girl and so many other young folks like her, regardless of any humble beginnings, all carry a spark of divinity within, and with it the power and potential to change the world.
During the painting process Aise and I were struck by the positivity and support we received from the public. I think there’s a great deal of local pride and resilience, and some protectiveness for this place with so much history, and it seemed clear that many folks were truly interested and engaged with what we were doing. We put a great deal of love, time, and soul into our work, and are appreciative of all the support and encouragement we received in return. It was an honor and blessing to have the opportunity to share our art with such a special place.
