The Lion of Anacostia

“The Lion of Anacostia is a mural created by artist JMEL (Jesse Melanson), rendered in his signature low polygon style. The artwork draws inspiration from the legendary figure of Frederick Douglass, also known as the “Lion of Anacostia,” and symbolizes his strength, resilience, and pivotal role in the 19th-century movement for African-American civil rights. The lion’s gaze towards a portal wrapped in gold represents a journey into a colorful future, while the swirling, vibrant clouds in the background reflect the ongoing evolution of the Anacostia neighborhood.
This mural not only honors Douglass’s enduring legacy but also celebrates the spirit of empowerment and transformation that continues to define Anacostia today. Located just a few blocks from Douglass’s estate, a National Historic Site, the mural stands as a powerful reminder of both the past and the vibrant future of the community.

For me, the heart of public art lies in connecting with people, learning their stories, and weaving these narratives into dynamic works that empower the communities they serve. Since 2017, I’ve had the privilege of designing and executing large-scale public art projects across the United States, transforming local stories and cultural identities into vibrant murals that celebrate heritage, promote unity, and energize public spaces. My signature geometric “origami” style combines bold, and timeless angular forms with vivid colors, creating a modern aesthetic that resonates with contemporary audiences while honoring the communities they represent.
With extensive experience managing complex projects across diverse communities, I excel at delivering murals that align with both artistic and organizational visions. Collaboration, cultural inclusivity, and user-centered design are cornerstones of my practice, ensuring each mural is not only visually compelling but also deeply rooted in the identities and stories of the people it serves.
