WASHINGTON, D.C. — July 6, 2026

Washington’s vibrant visual arts community is taking center stage this summer as the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (CAH) presents Rip! Tear! Collage as Critique, a new group exhibition highlighting the work of 23 District-based artists.

Now on view at the CAH Eye Street Gallery through August 7, 2026, the exhibition explores collage as more than an artistic technique. Through layered imagery, mixed media, and found materials, participating artists use collage to examine history, identity, memory, culture, and contemporary life from a wide range of perspectives.

The exhibition was developed through the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities’ Juried Exhibition Grant Program and features artists whose work reflects both personal experiences and broader social conversations. By combining photographs, paper, textiles, paint, and other materials, the exhibition demonstrates how collage can become a powerful form of storytelling and cultural commentary.

According to the Commission, the exhibition encourages viewers to consider the fragmented nature of history and how artists can reassemble images and ideas to create new narratives. Each piece offers a unique perspective while contributing to a broader conversation about community, resilience, and creative expression.

As one of the District’s leading supporters of local artists, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities continues to provide opportunities for emerging and established creatives to exhibit their work while making contemporary art accessible to the public. The Eye Street Gallery regularly hosts free exhibitions that celebrate the diversity and innovation of Washington’s creative community.

The exhibition arrives during a busy summer season for the city’s arts organizations, joining festivals, concerts, gallery openings, and cultural events taking place throughout Washington. Together, these programs continue to highlight the District as a destination where local artists and creative voices play an essential role in shaping the city’s cultural landscape.

Admission to Rip! Tear! Collage as Critique is free and open to the public.
