WASHINGTON, D.C. — June 6, 2026

Washington, D.C. is preparing to join a worldwide celebration of music as Make Music Day DC returns on June 21, bringing free live performances and community music-making activities to neighborhoods throughout the city.

Part of the international Make Music Day movement, the annual event takes place in more than 1,000 cities across the globe on the summer solstice, transforming streets, parks, businesses, and public spaces into stages for musicians of all ages and skill levels.

This year, the Anacostia Arts & Culture District will serve as the official chapter host for Washington, D.C., coordinating performances and activities throughout all eight wards as part of a citywide celebration of music and community.

Unlike traditional music festivals, Make Music Day is designed to be open and accessible to everyone. Professional musicians, student performers, neighborhood groups, and first-time artists are all encouraged to participate. Local businesses, community organizations, and public spaces can also register to host performances, creating opportunities for residents to experience live music in unexpected places throughout the city.

The global initiative was inspired by France’s annual Fête de la Musique, which began in 1982 and has since grown into an international movement celebrating the power of music to bring people together. Today, Make Music Day events take place across North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America, connecting communities through free public performances and interactive musical experiences.

In Washington, organizers hope the event will showcase the city’s diverse musical traditions while encouraging participation from residents in every neighborhood. From jazz and Go-Go to classical, gospel, hip-hop, and contemporary music, the celebration reflects the rich cultural landscape that continues to shape the District’s creative identity.

Registration remains open for performers and venues interested in participating. Existing music programs can be added to the citywide schedule, while musicians looking for a place to perform can be matched with participating venues.

As summer begins, Make Music Day DC offers an opportunity for residents and visitors alike to experience the city through sound, creativity, and community connection. Whether attending a neighborhood performance, hosting an event, or stepping up to perform, Washingtonians are invited to help fill the city with music on the longest day of the year.
